About the series

Soccer is the fastest growing sport among girls and women in the Netherlands. Many dream of a glorious career at the top, which has not always been self-evident. The ban on women playing in a league was only lifted in 1971.

In the four-part documentary series On the Way to the Top, filmmaker Mildred Roethof examines the current state of women's soccer. How do the players hold their own in a football world dominated by men? In what ways do inequality of opportunities, sexism, and media portrayal play a role in their journey to the top? The pros reveal their vulnerable side. For the first time, Daphne Koster speaks out about the Overmars issue. The filmmaker closely follows former players, the Dutch Lionesses, young talents, coaches, analysts, and other football enthusiasts. Nothing is off limits in this series: falling in love with your teammate, dealing with injuries, competition, or temporarily stopping playing football due to pregnancy. We see emotion, determination, passion, focus, victory, and defeat in the lives of the players, how young players pursue the dream of a football career, and the fight for a better future for women's soccer.
