About

With the tragicomic love story KAIN, we are creating a film based on the life and brilliant mindset of our friend Daniël Gellvoet, who lives in the heart of Amsterdam in a residential community for people with autism. Daniël often feels that he is seen as "not normal," which inadvertently places him outside of society. KAIN is a sincere story about the struggle of a person with autism in a neurotypical society that does not consider him as equal.

Kain is based on Daniël's character and his unique form of autism, and he will portray the lead role of Kain. The film will not only be ABOUT Daniël but, crucially, it will be MADE WITH him. We aim to showcase two perspectives: that of the neurotypical group, who can easily conform to societal norms, and the group who struggle with behavioral norms and are labeled with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to categorization, divergent individuals are often not regarded as full-fledged persons. It's very sad when they start to believe this themselves. This awareness deeply moved us, and thus the story of KAIN was born.

With KAIN, we tackle current and socially relevant themes of self-acceptance, perception, and exclusion. And all of this with a touch of (dark) humor. We depict how a person with autism perceives society, particularly our social norms, the roles we assume, and the masks we wear as individuals. These contradictions can be very challenging for a person with autism to understand.

Through Kain's perspective, we become more aware of ourselves and our social behaviors. We are making this film for a broad audience because this film is about all of us.
